Spilling the Beans on Green Bean Casserole

News

For 73 years, the Campbell Consumer Test Kitchens have been a partner and resource for America’s busy home cooks. Perhaps the most famous creation to come from Campbell’s food experts is the recipe for Green Bean Casserole.

The Grandmother of Green Bean Casserole

Created in 1954 by Dorcas Reilly, former manager of the Campbell Kitchens, this classic side dish featuring Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom soup takes its place alongside the turkey on more than 20 million holiday tables each Thanksgiving.

“My initial inspiration for the Green Bean Casserole was really quite simple,” said Dorcas, who is affectionately referred to as the “grandmother” of the Green Bean Casserole. “I wanted to create a quick and easy recipe around two things most Americans always had on hand — green beans and Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom soup.”

Classics with a Twist

Originally christened as Green Bean Bake, today’s Green Bean Casserole recipe is requested by more than 10,000 home cooks each year, but most frequently during the holidays. Through the years, the Campbell Consumer Test Kitchen and American home cooks have created variations on the traditional Green Bean Casserole recipe by adding or substituting different ingredients and flavors.

Through consumer feedback on how they make their particular version of green bean casserole, Campbell has developed many different versions of the dish, available on Campbell’s Kitchen.

One of the newest twists on this classic uses Campbell’s new Soups for Easy Cooking which adds deeper flavor from the Savory Portobello Mushroom soup. Another variation uses Campbell’s Condensed Golden Mushroom soup and adds crunchy chopped red pepper for great new flavor and texture. For a lighter version, the recipe can be prepared with Campbell’s 98% Fat Free Cream of Mushroom soup. Finally, for a fun and different twist, try making Green Bean Casserole Minis.

The Campbell Consumer Test Kitchen became known for traditional recipes that stand the test of time. Many aspects that made the Green Bean Casserole a hit in 1955 hold true today. Be sure to pick up the ingredients you need for this classic holiday side dish!
